Dice management? Worker Placement?  Action selection?  Awesome artwork and sweet components?  Engaging player interaction?    Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes!

I.  Am.  In.

(And yes, this is the deluxe version!  See the original Kickstarter campaign here for details)

Dice Settlers is the latest sweet, 4X release from NSKN Games!

I really love this company!

Back in 2016 when I first attended Essen Spiel, I got a chance to try Simurgh (an earlier NSKN creation), and I loved it!  We recently broke this game out again, and I enjoyed it even more than the first time! From where I sit, Dice Settlers is another SOLID board game by the creative workforce that is NSKN Games.

Yeah… yeah.  But how does the game play?

In this game, you perform the game’s various actions using dice as workers. Throughout the game you will build your cadre of worker dice in a way that supports whatever strategy you plan to use.  Then, during the action phase you will use those workers to gain resources, settle an area on the map, develop technology, and so on.  Think of the way you build your work force in Orléans and you’ll have a pretty good grasp on the dice management aspect to this game.  [It should come as no surprise that I love Orléans as well]

One other definite bonus of Dice Settlers is the play time. This is a game that manages to capture both the depth and the strategy inherent in a solid mid-weight Euro… but in a game that only takes one to one and a half hours to complete; without rushing those critical decisions!  As I’ve noted in other game write-ups… my game group and I often feel that the time estimates on most games is for people who play the game at a tournament level… haha.  So, I love a Euro that we can finish in enough time to play another game without going to bed at 0200!!  Dice Settlers really scratches that itch!!  😉

How is the deluxe version?

This deluxe version of Dice Settlers has a really nice table presence.  The dice are fantastic and the components are well made!  Now, if you’ve been following discussions on Kickstarter and BGG, you’ll know that the first print run of this game had some issues with the plastic tents used to settle the various map tiles.  Specifically, the purple and black tents included in the deluxe version of the game were about 3 times the size of the red and blue tents.  Fortunately, NSKN Games is putting the finishing touches on re-printing the affected tents and sending them free-of-charge to people who purchased the game.  That includes retailers.  So, if you buy this game before I get the replacements, I’ll send you the google documents sign up URL so you can receive the free tent replacements directly at your location.  Instead, if you buy the game after they ship me the replacements, I will simply include yours with the game.  Either way, I will make sure you get those replacement bits!  I want to be sure you have everything you need to get years of enjoyment from this game!

All the deluxe games shipped with the basic components included, so you can still play the game without those replacement components.  But if you cannot imagine playing without all the deluxe components on the table, you can pick up a copy here after NSKN Games sends me the replacement bits.  😉

[Update JUN 2019. Tent replacement printing is complete and NSKN is working on sorting, packaging, and shipping.]

If you enjoy dice management, area control, and dice as workers… you will LOVE this game!!  I certainly do!

Description

Dice Settlers is a dice-driven 4X (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate) strategic frontier-building game for 2-4 players vying for control of an unclaimed land.

Introduction

Players control a band of settlers and pioneers, aiming to explore, settle, and rule the new land. Dice Settlers features a mix of dice management and action selection, while maintaining the traditional characteristics of the 4X genre: map exploration, area control, player conflict, and technology development.

In a game of Dice Settlers, a board will be formed from the Map tiles. Players will then use their tents and houses to compete for control of these tiles, which are worth points at the end of the game and/or give bonus abilities to players who are present.

The dice represent various people who are able to work for you, using their skills to explore, trade, research, and expand. Your dice are drawn from your bag, rolled, used, and then returned to your bag when your bag is empty.

Tents are used to mark your presence on the map. Whoever has the most tents on a tile has control of that tile. Tents can be upgraded to houses, which mark permanent control of a tile.

Technology cards are both a source of points and a way to gain special abilities which will help you throughout the game.

Game Play!

The game is divided into rounds, and each round is further divided into 3 phases:

  1. Roll phase
  2. Action phase
  3. Clean-up phase

At the end of each round, check if any of the game end conditions have been triggered:

  • At least one player has placed all 5 of their houses on the map.
  • The general supply has no more VP tokens in it.
  • The stack of Map tiles has run out.
  • The general supply only has dice of 2 or fewer colours remaining.

If any end game conditions have been met, the game continues for one more round. After the next Clean-up phase, proceed to the final scoring.

Roll Phase

This phase can be performed simultaneously by all players, unless a player specifically requires that it is performed in order, in which case, the first player starts and then all other players follow in clockwise order.

Determine Dice quota

Draw Dice

Draw and Re-roll dice as applicable

After all players are finished drawing their dice and rolling, the Roll phase is over. The two actions that were possible in this phase (drawing more dice and re-rolling) may not be performed at any other time during the round.

Action Phase

Starting with the first player and going clockwise, each player must take a turn to perform one

main action, if able. In the rare case that a player cannot perform an action, they skip their turn. Then, following the same order (from the first to the last player in clockwise order), players may take a second turn to perform a different main action. After that, the Action phase is over.

While resolving one action, it is possible that you can gain an extra action. If you do, this additional action is taken during this turn immediately after resolving your current action.

IMPORTANT: Every action you take within the same round must be a different action than any other action you take. Actions taken by the other players have no impact on your choice of actions.

Taking an action has a cost – spending a number of icons of a specific type.

The main actions are recruit, explore, settle, raid, harvest, trade, and research.  I won’t get into the details here… but suffice to say each action is represented by a different dice resource so you’ll be doing a good bit of dice-management to ensure you have what you need!

Free actions and board reset

After this you get some free actions… and then you reset the board during the cleaning phase and move along.

Dice Settlers end game conditions

If any of the following conditions are met during the cleaning phase – the end game is triggered:

  • At least one player has placed all 5 of their houses on the map.
  • The general supply has no more VP tokens in it.
  • The stack of Map tiles has run out.
  • The general supply only has dice of 2 or fewer colors remaining.
