Hugely entertaining solo adventure in a tiny box…

Maquis Second Edition is HERE! One tiny box chock full of all the goodness of the 1st edition… with some more difficult 3-star missions, some new spare rooms and resources, and some tweaks to the original rules and components to enhance clarity and gameplay!  POUND SIGN WINNING!!!

This is another SOLID win for the awesome humans at Side Room Games! In the universe of solo gaming, my personal experience has been that tension’y goodness generally only sets in as you are approaching the final moments of the game. ⏰

Thinking, “Am I going to win?!?” feels like the only real source of tension and anticipation. Again, this is my personal experience… and I am not a huge solo gamer.. so take my thoughts with a grain of salt… hahaha. But still… if you’re thinking, “I feel you, Drew!” then read on… ?

In Maquis, the tension is there at every turn! This is an engaging, entertaining, nail-biting romp from start to finish and I LOVE it!!!

But, historically grounded board games aren’t your thing, Drew!

Normally I find games rooted in modern history to be a tad boring. I’m not sure if that’s a throwback to a past filled with too many liberal arts classes or not… but there it is.

I suppose it’s because most games with a solid modern history thematic just don’t appeal to me.

For reasons unknown to me (but clearly apparent to my subconscious ?), I find factually accurate war-time-period games to be… well… bland. My sincere apologies to my gaming friends who love these games (foremost among them, Mike. Sorry Mike!  Hehe…)

Also, I’m not usually a solo gamer. But, I loved Black Sonata and thought it was a particularly clever design… So when Dustin from Side Room Games mentioned that they were publishing Maquis, I was all-in! Sight unseen…

Confidence well placed! 😁

It turns out that this was definitely the right call! I LOVE this GAME!

Gushing aside… let’s take a look at the actual game; shall we?

Lazy, retired guy posts videos in lieu of prolific prose… ?

In keeping with the intermittently surfacing theme of retired laziness (hehehe), I’m going to leave the gameplay specifics to this wonderful video by Brian over at Super Board Sunday!!

If you want to experience the totality of goodness surrounding this game; look no further! The video is a full-on play through with a solid explanation of game mechanics along the way. Basically everything you need rolled into one burrito! Speaking of one… this play through is in fact the first time Brian actually WON!! This is a tricky little game, folks!

He takes the victory in stride… but I am sure there was much shouting and reveling after the camera shut down!! Nice one, Brian!

The video can be found <HERE>. Please note that Brian is playing the first edition in this video.. but since the tweaks aren’t particularly earth shattering… this video still gives you a wonderful idea of the gameplay… and I don’t have the time to re-start the entire write-up from scratch for this awesome little game!  Wahhhhhhh…. time… I always seem to be in need of more TIME! ⏰

I guess I had better at least put a link in to the original Kickstarter Second Edition campaign… sheesh! You can find the original campaign HERE.

And, next up is a wonderful unboxing video that shows all the content of the second edition by Daniel over at the WW2 Solitaire Board Game Channel. The video can be found HERE.

But of course I HAVE to say something

This game plays brilliantly! The basics of the game are very easy to pick up… but the entry level difficulty has enough depth to make it a challenge to win the game right out of the gate.

I love the fact that the placing of workers is directly linked to the push your luck factor!! “Should I put out another worker to get that food I need for the British spy mission? Or do I leave that last operative in the safe house so as to avoid the risk of a police blockade?!?! I mean… I DO have that gun….”

Ohhhhhh… this game is SWEEEEEEET! …and the tension in this solo masterpiece is palpable at every turn!

Solo.

Description

Maquis Second Edition has arrived!  This is remains one HECK of an amazing solo game!

Engage the Nazi occupation of France in la petite guerre to throw off the yoke of the oppressors and free your homeland!

Maquis is a solitaire worker-placement game with variable goals and a play time of approximately twenty minutes. The player places his resistance agents on spaces around town to achieve his goals – blowing up trains, publishing underground newspapers – but at the same time Milice collaborators and Wehrmacht soldiers patrol the area. Agents who can’t make it back to the safe house at the end of the day are arrested, and never seen again.
