This is the DELUXE, Second Edition version of The City of Kings; with the plastic hero sheet overlays and the dexterity micro-expansion and all that other good stuff!

OK… I originally split the base game and the expansion into two different products… but after a bit of reflection, I’ve changed tack. That is NOT in keeping with the Upstart lifestyle! I’m confident that all true upstarts WANT IT ALL!!!  And so… that’s what you’ll get here… every last bit of The City of Kings Goodness.  Read on my friends… read on.

[Side note up front – the included Expansion bundle includes the Side Quest Pack, Ancient Allies: Yanna and Kuma, Ancient Allies: Rapuil and Neoba, and finally, the Hero Pack (core hero miniatures plus-up)!]

You are a true Upstart.

You know you want ALL-IN on this sweet cooperative adventure.

This ALL-IN bundle is for YOU!

<insert battle cry here>  AaaaaarrrrrggglllaaaahhhhhhHH!!!

Class dismissed… 😉

Let’s talk more about this game!

So, the Deluxe pledge level of the base game includes a TON of bonus content all on its own:

A full copy of The City of Kings including:

6 x Heroes
7 x Stories
12 x Scenarios

In addition, all the following Deluxe upgrades are included:

4 x ‘Anti Knock’ sheets
2 x Quick Setup Storage Trays
1 x Dexterity Micro Expansion (120 wooden resources + 9 quests)
1 x Kickstarter Armour Pack
1 x Kickstarter Faction Pack

Add in the Expansion bundle (which is included here)… and you are off to the races!

Yeah, this is going to be FUN!!  Nice work, Frank West!!!

Scratching that D&D itch in a board game…

This is an adventure style table-top game that has a lot in common with Gloomhaven, Pathfinder, D&D… you get the idea.  Equip items to plus-up stats, explore with your character – using their unique skill sets to maximize your actions, and fight the monsters!  Each character’s special skills are unlocked as you “level up” and improve your stats.

Unlike many of its table-top colleagues, one unique characteristic of this game is that the players gather experience collectively! This means that the group also levels up together!

I REALLY like this aspect to the game… as it keeps the characters focused on the collaborative nature of the game. I loved Gloomhaven and of course I love Dungeons and Dragons… but a game where the party levels up together is just cool!!! No more having that one character in Gloomhaven snagging up all the treasure and running away so they don’t get killed in combat! So frustrating.  Oh wait… that was my character… haha. ANYway…

Story time..

The game comes with 7 stories and each included Ancient Allies pack comes with 3 more – so that’s 13 full stories to explore!  Move your works around the map gathering resources, move your Hero to interact with creatures, gather those experience points, and battle monsters!

As you gather resources you will roll dice based on your worker abilities… but to add a little fun to the adventure (smile) one side of each die has a symbol that causes you to drop attention tokens on the map.  So although you are rolling more dice and potentially gathering more resources, you’re also increasing your chances of dropping those attention tokens. Get to a certain number of these tokens and a monster is attracted.  “Darn it, Feglor!  Pay attention!”  Man, this game is sweet…

Components galore!

This game comes with a TON of components!  The component drop in Tom Vasel’s Dice Tower review took up a full 21 seconds!! AWE-SOME! Quality components and cards, beautiful artwork, and really well-made custom dice. And, when you add-in the hero minis, you are off to the races!!  I hope that at some point there will be a complete upgrade set available that turns all of the monsters into minis!!  Sure, that would cost a TON… but man-oh-man… I would buy it in a hot second! 😉

Some solid video reviews of the game…

For a really well-done 20-minute overview of how the game works Check out Tom Vasel’s review here. Side note – he has the Deluxe base game. Tom notes what he feels are a few well-explained weak-points in the game and notes that it really isn’t for him… but he also notes that a lot of people really like the game! The review is really balanced and is quite helpful for deciding if the game is for you 🙂  The Dice Tower… yeah, they’re pretty dang awesome! 🙂

One of the things that Tom and I both appreciate about the game is the play time.  I enjoyed Gloomhaven… a LOT.  But, after a few sessions I felt like it really started to drag and felt a smidge predictable.  So some of the things that this game adds (a shorter total play time and a solid dose of randomness in terms of monsters appearing when those attention tokens build up) were things I was looking for in Gloomhaven.  So for me, The City of Kings really works well.  But again, not every game is for everyone. Of course!

On a side note, Rhado really enjoyed the game and you can check out his “Final Thoughts” here.

For a well-done run-through of the entire game, the designer – Frank West – made a fantastic video that you can find here.

Oh yeah… I almost forgot about the sweet expansion bundle that is included with this package!!!

The expansion bundle includes the two Ancient Allies packs (each with 2 new characters that come complete with advanced skill sets for the seasoned player as well as 3 new stories to play alongside the main game’s original 7.

Next up is the Side Quest Pack that includes 50 new side quests and introduces players to two entirely new quest types!

And lastly, the Hero pack… sweet minis to represent the 6 core heroes in the game!

The Deluxe pledge level of the base game includes a TON of bonus content all on its own…

…but the included expansion bundle will have you literally SWIMMING in even more goodness!! 🙂  OK.  Maybe not literally… but STILL!

Let’s talk more about what comes in this sweet expansion bundle.

Ancient Allies: Yanna and Kuma

Calamis looks out from the battlements of the City of Kings, sensing something it had almost forgotten…

Yanna Stormtree and Kuma the Old Man of the Woods return to The City of Kings and join our heroes as playable characters.

Yanna and Kuma both feature advanced skills and are designed for experienced players who are looking for unique ways to play the game. In addition to the normal 12 skills, both characters have a special skill that unlocks as soon as you receive your first stat disc.

Adding even more depth to the game play, Yanna and Kuma come with new stories.

The 3 new stories can be played alongside the existing 7; meaning you can play them alongside or after the core story line. Each of these stories starts you with several skill discs, allowing you to craft a unique role for your character before the story begins, and they feature large 6*4 maps, new challenges, and easier to access linen!

Ancient Allies: Rapuil and Neoba

Thud! “I told you it was this way,” bickers the siblings as they step out – the first Tinkers to reach the City of Kings!

Rapuil and Neoba Olembe arrive at The City of Kings and join our heroes as playable characters.

Rapuil and Neoba both feature advanced skills and are designed for experienced players who are looking for unique ways to play the game. In addition to the normal 12 skills, both characters have a special skill that unlocks as soon as you receive your first stat disc.

More new stories!

The pack also comes with 3 new stories which can be played alongside the existing 7, meaning you can play them alongside or after the core story line. Each of these stories starts you with several skill discs, allowing you to craft a unique role for your character before the story begins, and they feature large 6*4 maps, new challenges, and easier to access linen!

Ancient Allies: Side Quest Pack

The Ancient Allies side quest pack adds 50 new side quests to The City of Kings; telling more stories and introducing you to more of the world.

It also features 2 new types of quests:

  1. Get To: An individual quest where you’ll need to make your way to a character somewhere in the world.
  2. Build: A mini game style quest where you’ll need to immediately help someone with a task. This features press your luck style dice rolling.

The Hero Pack

Six tasty miniatures!  One for each of the 6 core heroes….

Solid detail and plenty of heft!

These aren’t your grandma’s minis…

That’s a wrap!

If a solid cooperative adventure experience is something you think you’d like, you cannot go wrong with The City of Kings.  Period.

And, if you want the complete package for the best price around, we’ve got you backed! 😉

WIN!

This world used to be a garden full of life; from the flying Vadora to the deep-dwelling Dwarves – but that was before Vesh came. The world has been lost and only one city remains; the oldest city in the world – and the last refuge for all of us. Now… we fight back.

The City of Kings is a co-operative tactical role-playing board game for 1 – 4 players in which your character is tasked with exploring the hazardous world, trading for vital resources, and battling your enemies whilst uncovering a story of a world imperiled.

You start by choosing one of seven stories or twelve scenarios, then select your hero, with each of the six heroes featuring twelve unique skills and nine customizable stats that allow you to specialize in attacking, healing, tanking, worker management, or whatever you desire. Aside from your hero, you need to manage your workers, who must gather resources in order to trade for new items and build structures to gain powerful bonuses.

You explore across the Ageless Realms by turning over tiles, discovering resources, side quests, hazards, building sites, traders and creatures as you continue to power up whilst preparing to enter Azure Rise.

At its heart, The City of Kings is a complex puzzle featuring endless strategic battles. Each creature is generated from a pool of spells, characteristics and stats offering over 10,000,000 unique battle situations. There are no dice, damage is persistent, it’s up to you to customize your characters and work together to come up with a strategy to defeat whoever stands in your way.
