This is a light, fun, fast-and-furious simultaneous action/real time puzzle game by Lucky Duck Games! Now, I happen to be a huge fan of Lucky Duck and so I try to carry everything they’ve created since the shop first got going in 2019.
If you’re scratching your head thinking, “Lucky Duck,” they made Chronicles of Crime.. the SWEET whodunit game that uses an app to bring the characters and rooms to life, right? You would be correct. And, I LOVE that game.
And, I really love this game too! ❤️
Totally different vibe, of course… but still.. a ton of fun. Normally I’m not a big fan of simultaneous action or “real time” games… but this works for me in Jetpack!! It’s a lighthearted race to escape a randomly generated lab; scoring as many points as you can along the way.
The game is based on the mobile app game of the same name.. and like it’s digital predecessor, it’s addictive and it is a hoot! Yes, I said it is a HOOT! 😉
Build your lab… start your jetpack… and start building your path through the lab. GO!
Each lab is constructed of 4 lab section cards that are randomly distributed to each player. Each of these are numbered 1 through 4 and are arranged in numerical order. The cards themselves have a light-colored graph-paper’y grid that is perfect for lining up your Tetris shaped (aka polyomino) path pieces… of course!
[Fear not, young joyrider… if you think you received the most complicated lab pattern ever designed and the other players have it made in the shade, you can rest easy. At the end of each race to escape the lab (three races total), you’ll pass your 4 lab cards to the player to your left!] Nice and fair!
A pile of yellow, translucent Tetris shaped bits are piled in the middle of the table… and three mission cards are revealed. These represent different path-pattern requirements that score bonus points at the end of a particular round. More on that later 😉
Once you’re all set up, it’s go time! ⏳
Players start building a path along their lab using the Tetris pieces; following some simple rules.
The pieces themselves must link in a manner such that the last square of the piece you just laid down matches up orthogonally with the start square of the next piece; the starting piece has to have one segment hanging off the first lab tile; and certain areas of the lab are off-limits for path placement.
The round ends when the first Jetpack Joyrider escapes from the tail end of their 4th lab segment. Easy.
This feels like a race game… but, there’s a catch! ?
Unlike most race games, in Jetpack Joyride it’s not necessarily important to be the first person to escape your lab and trigger the end of the round. That is, you can still score plenty of points and ultimately win the game without actually exiting your lab… ever!
If you take a bit longer to construct your lab you can focus better on passing over coins (points) with your Tetris-piece-Jetpack-path, and you can work on meeting the mission goals for each round to scoop up those tasty bonus points! I like it!!
Once the end of the round is triggered, players count up their points.
Go, go Gadget! (that was such a solid cartoon!) ?
Ahem. OK… now that my waning 80’s cartoon nostalgia is complete… let’s get on with the gameplay.
One gadget card is revealed for each player in the game. So in a 4-player game, 4 gadget cards will be revealed at the end of each of the first two rounds. These cards give players some sort of ongoing ability that generally makes it easier to carve your path through the labs.
The cards are purposefully unbalanced and act as a catch-up mechanism; with the cards being chosen in reverse score order. So if you’re running behind… sputtering about in your jetpack and such… you can snag the best gadget on offer and hopefully use it to dominate the remaining rounds!
After three rounds are completed, the final sores are tallied, and the winner gets to boast of their undaunted jetpack navigation skills while sipping a cool glass of Chardonnay (or iced tea if that’s more your thing)!
Videos… to help you get a better feel for the game.
This 3 minute video by Board to Death does a fabulous job of running through the basics of the game without speaking at 100 words per second or rushing to the point where the video ends and you’re scratching your head thinking, “huh?” Hehe. You can check it out HERE.
And you can find a quick review by Tom Vasel over at the Dice Tower right HERE.
Hint, hint.. he liked it!
Finally, here’s a 17 minute full-game playthrough by one of my favorite people in the play-through universe… Tom from Slickerdrips! The video is HERE.
Final lab sample analysis… ?
This is a wonderfully fun, fast-playing game that is PERFECT for an end-of-the-night filler when your nerves are jumbled from a 4-hour heavy Euro but your not quite ready to call it quits! It’s equally well suited to an enjoyable tabletop gaming experience with your friends and family that don’t quite share your enthusiasm for said 4-hour crunchy Euros!
It’s fast.. it’s fun… and it’s the sort of game that has you crying out, “slow down, Blake… I need more time to get those missions completed!!” and “Madison! Don’t take that gadget… I wanted that one!” ?
Game on!
