Having recently gotten back from BGG CON (which was absolutely fabulous as usual!!!), and having weathered and greatly enjoyed the time honored tradition of the Thanksgiving celebration (huge meal, insane kitchen logistics, and plenty of wine to smooth out the edges), and now preparing to complete Christmas decorating AND finally… getting packed for PAX Unplugged later this week… I bring you…
Dig Your Way Out and the Dig IN Expansion!! With all the expansion campaign Kickstarter exclusives!
This month has quite the inadvertent theme emerging. Pirates, Prison Breaks, and Witchcraft!
Oh My!
[I mean.. we all knew I was going to say, “Oh My,” right?] ππ€
I am really excited about all of the offerings this month… and this latest Borderline Editions release is no exception. I carried the original game back in 2019 or 2020, when it first released, and people LOVED it. I sold out faster than I would have liked… so when a chance came to grab a few more copies, I could not resist!
[It also doesn’t hurt that I found the game incredibly fun… and akin to “Cash N’ Guns” in some ways (although this game does not ship with foam weapons and the gameplay is quite different.. hahaha. I mean, other than THAT… it reminds me of that old classic in terms of thematic feel).
Anyhoo… this one is a fun change-up from my more traditional medium/heavy Euro offerings… but it does not disappoint!
Bundle details?
This Upstart offering comes with three possible options.
- This first bundle includes the original classic – “Dig Your Way Out” – as well as the newly released “Dig Your Way Out – Dig In” expansion (with all the Kickstarter exclusives from that campaign). ππ
- A “bundle” that includes JUST the base game. This option on the drop down is one copy of the base game without the expansion.
- And finally, last (but not least by any means), the “Dig In” Expansion… all by its lonesome. Help find this one a good home! πβ€οΈ

The original Dig Your Way Out by Borderline Editions… PLUS their new expansion – Dig Your Way Out – Dig IN! Including all the KS exclusives from the expansion campaign! Game ON!
Dig Your Way Out is a game created by David Simide in which you play the role of an inmates trying to escape from prison. Be the first prisoner to dig your hole. Craft tools with salvaged materials, buy them with cigarettes, or extort them from other players, the end justifies the means!
The main goal is to reach the required tunnel points (which can change according to the number of player) representing the progress of your tunnel.
On his turn, a player has 2 actions, which he can choose to spend in:
- Searching: he draws the number of Search cards indicated on the place he’s in
- Moving: he rolls the die to determine where he can go
- Joining a gang if he has the matching accessories, and get their passive buff
- Crafting if he has the corresponding cards
- Playing an action card
- Extorting another inmate (extortion is divided into 2 stages:
- Intimidation in which the attacking player names the tools he wants to extort (a shovel, a pick or a spoon). The targeted player may then cooperate and give it right away, avoiding combat. Or defend himself, launching combat.
- Combat: Taking turns, the two players play before them Weapon cards form their hand, beginning by the defender. Once a player canβt or wonβt play a Weapon card, they loose the combat.
If the defender looses, they have to give to the attacker the Tool they ask for. If the defender doesnβt have this card in hand or if the loser is the attacker, the winner picks one card, randomly chosen, from the loserβs hand. The loser takes 1 Beating.
Some actions can only be performed in certain locations:
- cell block: dig, place one and only one Tool card (Spoon, Pick or Shovel from your hand on your Prisoner board. You immediately score the number of Tunnel points indicated on the card.
- recreation area: Buy and sell, the local currency is cigarettes.
- infirmary: Heal, remove 1 beating.(a player with 1 beating can’t perform the craft action, a player with 2 beating can’t perform neither the craft nor the dig action.)
- cafeteria: steal a spoon.
Dig your way out requires to permanently be aware of what other players have in their hand. Thus you can know who to extort and who is a threat for you.
Although picking up tools or weapon is visible to everyone, there are plenty of ways to prevent other inmates from being too pushy: action cards, gang passives and above all your background card.
Background cards are powerful one-shot abilities, which can change the game when used at the right time. And this is even more true when you belong to the relevant gang.
Dig In is an expansion for DYWO that introduces the prison warden and 7 new places. Bringing many novel options and strategies to the table, this expansion pushes DYWOβs already great replayability to its limits!
As its beautiful cover hints at, Dig In contains the prison Warden. This non-playable character walks around the board and sends bad-mannered inmates to solitary confinement. On the other hand, you can go to her office and bribe her in advance with cigarettes so she can help you get an edge over other inmates later.
This expansion also offers 6 new places that can be used as alternatives to existing places on the board. They change the actions available in each place and add many more options to dig your way out. Each of these new places is optional and independent from one another, allowing you to build a different and unique prison layout, every time you play.
In the Library you can rehabilitate yourself to get a new Background as well as get smart enough to spy on the hands of other players.
In the Gambling cells you can gamble using cigarettes but you can also plan (on toilet paper!) your next moves in advance.
In the Laundry joining a gang becomes easier and you can also get bandages to craft or heal yourself later.
In the Workshop you can hone your digging skills or upgrade the Tools that you already have.
In the Gym you can work out to be prepared for future fights, or even start a brawl with every player in the place!
Finally, if you send prisoners to the Psychiatric ward, they will get psychological Trauma that will hinder their actions, until they can heal it.
